Fixed vs Varifocal Camera Lenses
The difference between fixed and varifocal lenses is focal-length adjustment. A fixed lens has one focal length. A varifocal lens lets you adjust focal length within its specified range. Neither type is automatically better: the right choice depends on the scene and the detail you need.
What a fixed lens does
A fixed-focal-length camera provides a set field of view for its sensor and lens combination. You choose the model and mounting position to frame the required area. Fixed focal length does not mean every fixed-lens camera has the same viewing angle or that all focus arrangements are identical.
What a varifocal lens does
A varifocal lens allows the view to be adjusted during setup or, on supported motorized models, remotely. Increasing focal length usually narrows the view for the same sensor format. Reducing it usually widens the view. Focus may need adjustment after changing focal length; autofocus is a model-specific feature.

Varifocal does not mean PTZ
A motorized varifocal lens can change framing without moving the camera housing. A PTZ camera also has supported pan and tilt movement. A PTZ cannot watch every direction at once, and a varifocal label does not imply automatic tracking.
Optical adjustment versus digital zoom
Optical adjustment changes how the scene is projected onto the sensor. Digital zoom enlarges part of an existing image. It cannot recover detail that was never recorded. A constant megapixel setting does not guarantee identical usable detail at every focal length or lighting condition.
How to choose
- Define the target area, distance, and required detail.
- Compare the actual horizontal and vertical field of view.
- Decide whether adjustment is needed only at installation or later.
- Check focus controls and low-light performance for the exact model.
- Test recorded footage with moving subjects in the real scene.
