HD-CVI Compatibility: Camera and Recorder Checklist
HD-CVI compatibility must be checked for the exact camera, recorder, and selected video mode. A BNC connection or a multi-format label does not guarantee that every function will work.
1. Match the video format
HDCVI, HDTVI, AHD, and CVBS are different video formats. Some cameras allow output-mode selection, and some recorders accept several formats. Confirm a supported format at both ends. IP video uses a network connection and is not another interchangeable coaxial signal.
2. Check resolution and frame rate
Compare the camera’s output mode with the recorder’s input table. Check recording resolution and frame rate separately. Limits can vary by channel, encoding mode, and the number of enabled cameras.
3. Verify optional functions
Audio over coax, two-way audio, camera-menu control, alarms, and analytics are separate compatibility questions. Confirm each required function in the manufacturer documentation and test it on the intended equipment.
4. Check the power arrangement
A camera may use a separate power supply or a supported PoC connection. Do not connect an ordinary camera to an improvised coaxial power source. Verify voltage, power demand, and supported camera/recorder combinations.
5. Validate the cable path
Check the cable type, route length, connectors, and every intermediate device. Use the transmission limits specified for the actual format and equipment. Existing cable that carried an older image may not support the intended upgrade.
6. Test before replacing every camera
- Use a representative camera and cable run.
- Verify stable live video and recorded playback.
- Test required audio, menu control, and events.
- Check operation under night-mode power demand.
- Confirm playback and export at the intended settings.
- Document working firmware versions and camera output modes.
For IP channels on a hybrid recorder, also check supported protocols, codecs, bandwidth, and channel-allocation rules. Compatibility should be demonstrated for the complete system, not inferred from a brand name.
