First, the reader sends credential data to the controller. Next, the controller checks the assigned rules. If the user has permission, the system releases the lock and records the event. In addition, door contacts and alarm inputs report forced doors, held doors, or unusual activity.

A centralized design may manage many doors from one platform. However, distributed controllers can continue local operation if a network connection is interrupted. Therefore, the right design balances daily use, system growth, network limits, and recovery needs.
