UPS Backup Power for CCTV Systems
An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, can keep connected equipment operating during a power interruption for a limited time. For CCTV, a useful backup plan covers the complete recording path—not only the recorder.
Which equipment needs backup?
Identify the cameras’ power sources, recorder, storage, and network switches needed for local recording. If remote viewing or cloud services must continue, include the router and other required communications equipment. Backup power at your premises cannot guarantee that an outside internet service remains available.
Capacity and runtime are different
Check both the UPS watt and VA limits against the connected load. Then use the manufacturer’s runtime curve for that specific UPS and battery configuration. A VA rating alone does not tell you how many minutes the system will run.
Allow for camera heaters, infrared illumination, PTZ movement, and other peak loads. Include the PoE source’s own consumption and conversion losses without counting the same camera load twice. Battery age, temperature, condition, and load affect actual runtime.
Choose the appropriate UPS design
- Standby: transfers to battery operation when input power falls outside its supported range.
- Line-interactive: commonly provides automatic voltage regulation as well as battery backup.
- Online double-conversion: normally converts incoming power through a DC stage and inverter; operating modes and bypass behavior depend on the model.
Check transfer time, output waveform, equipment compatibility, noise, ventilation, and management features. No topology description replaces the selected model’s specification.
Plan shutdown and recovery
If supported, configure a controlled recorder or server shutdown before the battery is exhausted. Confirm that the UPS management interface works with the equipment. Test restart behavior and verify that cameras reconnect and recording resumes after power returns.
UPS versus surge protection
A surge protector does not provide battery runtime. A UPS may include surge protection, but that does not replace a coordinated protection and grounding design for exposed power and data routes. See the surge protection guide.
Acceptance and maintenance checklist
- Document the required backup duration and essential equipment.
- Measure or calculate the connected load and select adequate capacity.
- Check the manufacturer’s runtime estimate at that load.
- Use only supported batteries and accessories.
- Perform an authorized, controlled outage test following the equipment instructions.
- Confirm recording continuity, alerts, shutdown, and recovery.
- Schedule battery inspection and replacement according to the manufacturer.
