Surge Protection for CCTV and Network Equipment

A surge protective device helps limit transient overvoltage reaching compatible equipment. It reduces a defined risk; it does not guarantee that a camera, recorder, or network will survive every electrical event.

Protect the relevant paths

CCTV equipment can connect to mains power, Ethernet, coaxial video, and other wiring. Protection on one path does not automatically protect the others. Assess exposed cable routes, outdoor cameras, building entry points, and the power and data interfaces of the equipment.

Match the protector to the interface

Use a protective device designed for the circuit. An Ethernet protector must support the required network speed and PoE method where applicable. A coaxial protector must support the signal format and any power carried by the coax. Verify voltage, current, connectors, environmental rating, and manufacturer installation requirements.

Grounding, bonding, and placement matter

Protection depends on correct installation as part of the site’s grounding and bonding design. Follow the equipment instructions for placement and connection. Have qualified personnel assess building entry protection, outdoor installations, and mains electrical work. Do not improvise grounding connections or bypass protective earth.

A power strip is not necessarily a surge protector

Multiple outlets or a power switch do not establish surge protection. Check the product’s documented function, ratings, and applicable safety listing. A single joule number is not enough to compare protection for different circuits or applications.

Surge protection is not backup power

A surge protector does not keep cameras recording during an outage. For that, evaluate a UPS backup-power system covering the necessary cameras, recorder, and network equipment. Backup power and surge protection address different requirements.

Inspection and maintenance

Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and replacement instructions. Some devices indicate when protection is no longer available; continued power at an outlet does not prove that protection remains effective. Inspect the system after a significant electrical event and replace damaged or exhausted devices as instructed.

Planning checklist

  • Identify exposed power and signal routes.
  • Record the equipment interfaces and operating requirements.
  • Select compatible protective devices for each relevant path.
  • Confirm placement, environmental protection, and grounding with a qualified installer.
  • Test normal video, network, and PoE operation after installation.
  • Document inspection and replacement requirements.
